SASSA Grants 2024

The Government has adjusted various social grants to help alleviate the effects of inflation, which currently stands at 5.3%. While the increases do not fully cover the inflation rate, they are aimed to offer some relief to recipients. The benefits are paid out monthly directly with the beneficiary’s bank account or via any other payment method they choose.

SASSA Grants Updated Eligibility

To claim SASSA grants, applicants need to fulfil the eligibility requirement set for that particular grant.

  • The claimants need to be South African or a percentage residing in the country during the application process.
  • Older Person Grant: For couples, the yearly income must not exceed R185,040, whereas for single individuals, it should not surpass R92,520 annually.
  • Child Support Grant: The annual income limit for individuals claiming this grant is set at R4,800 monthly and R9,600 per month for partners.

SASSA Grants

  • Care Dependency Grant: If you are unmarried, your annual earnings should not be more than R238,800, whereas for couples, it should be less than  R477,600.
  • If you want to claim the foster child grant, we want to inform you that this grant is required to be mean tested.

The claimants need to submit relevant documents such as proof of residency, proof of income, medical assessments and many more.

List of Highest Paying SASSA Grants

Here is the list of the highest-paying grants and new adjustments that will be made in a few months.

Grant for Older Person: For those aged 75 and over, this grant will increase from R2,200 to R2,210 per month by October 2024. Whereas for those aged 60 to 70, the grants will rise from R2,180 to R2,190.

Disability Grants: For individuals aged 18 to 59 with permanent and chromic impairment, the front will go from R2,180 to R2,190 in October 2024.

Care Dependency Grants: Similar to disability grants, this will increase from R2,180 to R2,190 in October 2024. It supports individuals under 18 who require full-time care.

Foster Child Grants: This grant will be raised from R1,180 to R1,190. Eligibility requires a court order and coordination with social workers

Despite this increase, many beneficiaries believe that the adjustments are still not enough to cover their basic needs. Administrative challenges, such as delays and issues with applications and payments, have also been reported.

SASSA Grants Increase 2024

The adjustment aims to provide more support but may still fall short in comparison to the escalating cost of living.

  • Disability, Old Age, War Veterans and Care Dependency grants are to increase by R100 in two stages. From April 2024, there was a rise of R90, with an additional R10 expected from October 2024.
  • The payment for the Foster Child Grant will rise by R50, making the total R1,180.
  • The Child Support Grants will also be increasing by R20, bringing the total to R530. In contrast, additional top-ups of R250 will bring the total to R750.
